Spring into Safety!

Shake-off the winter blues and get ready for spring! If the birds are any indication - spring has sprung in Louisiana.

As you get ready for a thorough spring cleaning - don't leave safety at the doorstep as you haul out your cleaning supplies and equipment. This is especiually important if you have small children in or around your home.

Here are a few quick reminders for a safe clean-up:

1. Don't mix cleaning products! Stay with one cleaning product at a time - otherwise those days of sleeping through chemistry can come back to haunt you.

2. Wear a mask when dusting. Okay, this may seem a little excessive - but if you are one to have to reach for the Benedryl after a day of cleaning - you may find it just the protection you need.

3. Don't try to be "Super-Cleaner" and carry away more than you should... There are no Olympic medals to be earned for lifting at home. Make sure you can see over the load you are carrying - and keep a hand free if you are going up or downstairs.

4. Take extra care when moving large pieces of furniture and appliances. Always use proper lifting technique - keep your back straight and lift with your legs. Also, wear closed-toe shoes so you don't hurt your toes with an unexpected drop. If an object is too heavy and you can't find someone else to move it for you, just clean around it.

5. When you finish cleaning be sure to empty any buckets of water and put out of a child's reach all cleaning products. At the end of a cleaning day you may feel too tired to do so - but save your energy for this most important last step!
